PUBLICATIONS - Member Publications - titles D-H only

In this section we list some of the wonderful books authored or published independently by various World Ship Society members.  A listing here does not constitute an endorsement of the item.  Books are listed in alphabetical order by title, (ignore the word "The" at the beginning of a title), along with important technical information gleaned from the book itself, or from the author and/or publisher.  Books listed in this section are not published by the World Ship Society, and therefore are not available through the Society (unless specifically noted).  We suggest you contact a good maritime-oriented book-seller for details on price and availability.

If you are a World Ship Society member and have ever published a book, please send the details to the webmaster@worldshipsociety.org (include "New Member Publication" [plus title] in the subject line), and add a description, and a color scan of the cover, stating if the book is still available for purchase — if so, where.  The decision to list a particular book is solely up to the discretion of the webmaster. If you are a publisher or an interested reader with details of a book you feel should be listed here, please forward as much detail as possible.

The intent of this section is to showcase some of the excellent books published independently by some of our members.  UNLESS SPECIFICALLY NOTED, NONE OF THE ITEMS ARE PUBLISHED BY THE WORLD SHIP SOCIETY, AND THEREFORE ARE NOT AVAILABLE FROM OUR SOCIETY.

Danish Ship Design 1936-1991: The work of Kay Fisker and Kay Korbing

Author: Bruce Peter,     ISBN: 1 871947 72 3.     Ref: 8447,     Publisher: Ferry Publications, Feb 2004

A 'magnum opus' on modernism in Danish ferry and liner interiors by Bruce Peter,  has now been published by Ferry Publications. It is a magnificent production with hundreds of never-before-seen colour and black/white images, a 40,000 word text based entirely on original research, appendices and index. Unlike Passenger Liners Scandinavian Style, this one is a softback and the two complement each other very well as this is a much more focused production about the works of three specific designers (two in particular). The book covers the complete works of Kay Fisker, Palle Suenson and Kay Koerbing for DFDS, DSB, Tor Line, Norwegian America and DS paa Bornholm af 1866. All the ships are thoroughly illustrated outside and in and the pictures are of high quality by some of Denmark's best architectural photographers   THIS IS NOT A WORLD SHIP SOCIETY PUBLICATION AND IS NOT AVAILABLE FROM THE SOCIETY.  Published by Ferry Publications. Dannebrog Fleet 1883-1993, The (hardback edition)

Author: Søren Thorsøe, et al,     ISBN: 87 984305 0 5,     Ref: 8064,    Publisher:  Dannebrog Rederi A/S, Apr 1993 (in association with the World Ship Society) Not a WSS publication.                   Status: Out of Print

The history of another distinguished Danish company.  208 pages.  149 ships, most photographed.  Although not published by the World Ship Society, this superb case bound book has been published by Dannebrog Rederi A/S, who have kindly made copies available for sale to Society members.  Written in English, the book celebrates 110 years of shipowning, and begins with a frank account of the company's fortunes by its present manager.  At one time the largest Danish tramp shipowner, Dannebrog has been involved in a fascinating variety of ventures, from cargo liner services to offshore supply and from running livestock carriers to managing its own shipyard. The stars of the book, however, are the 149 owned and managed ships.  Comprehensive details and a thorough history are given for each, and all except one (which was cancelled) are illustrated, usually with more than one photograph showing the ship at different stages in her career.  The large format of the book and the art paper used does full justice to the many excellent photogrpahs.  The fleet has been extremely varied, and has included Baltic and ocean-going dry cargo ships, steam and motor coasters, coastal and ocean tankers, offshore supply vessels, livestock carriers, heavy lift ships, ro-ros and a car ferry. There is much additional information including detailed accounts of individual ships' war service, and the fascinating story of the "fake" KRONBORG and her attempt to supply the German cruiser KÉNIGSBERG in 1915.

Den Tod vor Augen: Die unglückliche Reise der Bremer Bark LIBELLE in den Jahren 1864 bis 1866

Authors: Bernd Drechsler, Thomas Begerow, Peter-Michael Pawlik,               ISBN: 978 3 89757 333 8,     Ref: 8674,     Publisher: Hauschild Verlag, Bremen, 2007

The book describes the dramatic voyage of the newly built Bremen barque LIBELLE during the years 1864 to 1866 from Bremerhaven via Cape Horn and Honolulu to Hong Kong, from there to San Francisco and again Honolulu until she stranded and was lost on Wake Island in the Central Pacilfic en-route to Hong Kong. On board was a valuable cargo consisting of gold, silver, and mercury; among the passengers was the famous English opera singer Anna Bishop, wife of the composer Sir Henry Bishop ("Home Sweet Home"). The passengers and most of the crew were rescued by the skills of the first mate of the barque who sailed with them in a small boat from Wake Island to the Marianas.

Ferries West: A West Coast Photo Album    (West Coast Maritime Series # 7)

Author: S.C. Heal,     ISBN: 978 1 895590 43 2,     Ref: 8751,     Publisher: Cordillera Books, 2010

Ferries are as much a part of B.C. as to be comparable in importance with the estimated several thousand land bridges to be found around the province.  The Coastal Ferry System is as old as settlement along the coast when the predecessors of the modern ferries, the steamship lines like Canadian Pacific Navigation, Boscowitz, Union Steamships and Grand Trunk Pacific/Canadian National and Northland provided a complex of services from Puget Sound to S.E. Alaska.  Today the modern B.C. Ferries Corporation wrestles with mistakes from the past, a pressing need to replace old vessels, high fuel prices and ongoing societal and political issues.  This book will be more pictorial and less a matter of narrative with approximately 325 photos. 200+ pages.  8½ in x 11 in, paper cover. Full Line, Full Away: A Towboat Master's Story, 2nd edition

Author: James E. (Ted) Wilson, S.C. Heal,     ISBN: 978 1 8955904 3 2,     Ref:  8732,     Publisher: Cordillera Books, 2009

This is the story of James E. “Ted” Wilson originally written in cooperation with maritime historian Syd Heal. Captain Wilson went to his first seagoing job as a deckboy out of Victoria at the early age of 14, in 1933. His colourful career saw him working through the ranks in British Columbia coast towboats from deckhand to licensed master.

There were amusing and interesting incidents and a few that were tragic. The lady of the night aboard a C.N. coastal liner, the efforts of a towboat crew to tow away a hotel, the barking dog which became a navigation aid, the Liberty ship that tried to tow Captain Wilson’s tug under and the ghosts of Cape Scott to name a few.

Ted Wilson was employed by small and large companies throughout his career, but the highlights for him were the eleven successful years he enjoyed running his own successful company Dola Towing, followed by his years with Island Tug & Barge Ltd. He was a witness from within to the process of corporate marriage between Island Tug and Vancouver Tug Boat Company, which lead to the formation of the biggest tug and barge company in the industry, Seaspan International Ltd.The original issue of this book in 1991 was the first such account to come out in book form from within the industry, and little of a similar nature has followed. It qualifies as a true nautical classic and this reissue recognizes that the book deserves to be kept available as an account of B.C. tugboating in the middle years of the Twentieth Century.

Author: Capt. Richard Woodman,     ISBN: 0 85177 721 X,     Ref: 8225,     Publisher: Conway Maritime Press, 1997 (re-print 1999)

Throughout the book, the impact of technology on the evolution of the ship is dealt with logically to put developments in their economic and political contexts, and changes in the design of both warships and merchantmen are outlined. Entwined with this history are the stories of the characters who influenced ship design and the men who commanded them.  The book in general follows the arguments propounded in Conway's highly praised History of the Ship series: these are underpinned with the author's many years of seagoing experience and numerous fiction and non-fiction writings on maritime topics. Whilst dealing with a hugely complex subject, the author, WSS member Capt. Richard Woodman,  presents his truly international thesis in a highly readable and enlightening manner. HM Customs & Excise Cutters & Launches: Class Directory - Cutters since 1946 - Launches since 1920

Author: Philip Simons (compiler),     ISBN: n/a,     Ref: 8538,     Publisher: Small Craft Group, World Ship Society, 2004     [Ref: x 8639]

An excellent new publication from the WSS Small Craft Group  HM CUSTOMS & EXCISE CUTTERS & LAUNCHES  Class Directory  Cutters since 1946 – Launches since 1920  In frequent field trips around the United Kingdom, looking for surviving military small craft, the author was surprised to find many examples of surviving Customs cutters and launches. However, unlike those vessels of the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force, which are fairly well documented, he had extreme difficulty in finding out anything about the Customs craft that he had found. It seemed that, although the service had operated a large number of craft during the years 1920 – date, there was nowhere that the enthusiast could turn to for details. For a few years he photographed and listed all the vessels he found, checked builders lists, trawled through 1950’s and 1960’s Admiralty Small Craft Disposal Lists, made numerous phone calls, and wrote a whole forest of letters. More recently he went to the National Records Office where information on the pre WWII vessels could be read and finally found two Customs Officers who had an interest in the subject and who helped him to tidy up the book ready for publication.  The result is a directory of all the various classes of craft operated by HMC&E during the period 1920 – 2005, although the author is acutely aware that with the lack of published material available for research, some classes, or individual boats, may have been omitted.

This 84 page A4 portrait softback book with card covers is lavishly illustrated with 123 photographs of craft both in service and ex service and 11 pages of top rate drawings. Price only £10 (UK) £12 (elsewhere) including postage and packing.  Available now from the World Ship Society Small Craft Group, 5 Rogate Drive, Estover, Plymouth, Devon, PL6 8SY, UK. Howard Smith Shipping: Enterprise and Diversity, 1854-2001

Author: Ian Farquhar,     ISBN: 0 9599079 5 5,     Ref: 8412,     Publisher: Nautical Association of Australia, 2002

Howard Smith was in the business of shipping longer than any other Australian ship owner. From the purchase of the 177-ton passenger and cargo steamer EXPRESS in 1854 until the sale of the last cargo ship, the 54,880-ton tanker ERA in 1997, Howard Smith developed into one of Australia’s major shipping companies and industrial enterprises. Originally established by Captain William Howard Smith, in partnership with his sons, it was significant that there was always a member of the Howard Smith family on the Board of the company, from the time of the first limited liability company in 1883 until 1999 - a unique record not matched by any other Australian listed company of its size.  Apart from a 32-page brochure produced by the company for its centenary in 1954, no previous history of the Howard Smith group has been published. With a Foreword by Captain John J. Evans, WSS member Ian Farquhar’s 168 page reference work provides a brief history of the company, a 192 item Chronology dealing with significant events in the history of the company, details of directors, financial information, and a comprehensive list of all the cargo and passenger vessels, hulks, lighters and managed tonnage. While towage and salvage interests are covered in the history and chronology, the book does not include a separate listing of all the tugs owned or in joint ventures.  The book contains 116 illustrations featuring virtually all the cargo and passenger ships, and the early tugs, with many of the photographs being published for the first time. Although concentrating on the shipping history, the book also provides details of the other ventures in coal, sugar, steel, cement, tourism, heavy industry, banking, distribution and hardware in which the Howard Smith group was involved during its 147 year history - a history which only came to an end in August 2001 when the company was acquired by the Perth based group, Wesfarmers.             Being a history of the ships, both owned and managed from 1854, together with a brief history and chronology of significant dates in the history of the Howard Smith Group, with particular emphasis on the shipping history.  A detailed list of all harbour and salvage tugs either woned or operated in partnerships after 1962 has not been included.  168 pages. 185 mm x 260 mm.  Soft cover.  THIS IS NOT A WORLD SHIP SOCIETY PUBLICATION AND IS NOT AVAILABLE FROM OUR SOCIETY. Huddart Parker: A Famous Australasian Shipping Company 1876-1961

Authors: W.A. Laxon (completed by H.W. Dick, I.J. Farquhar, T.S. Stevens),     ISBN: ???,  Ref: 8682,  Publisher: Nautical Association of Australia, 2008

While writing a history of Huddart Parker, Auckland maritime historian Bill Laxon regrettably became ill and died. His draft script was taken over and completed by three of his friends – Howard Dick, Ian Farquhar and Tom Stevens. The 248 page book is the first definitive history of this important Melbourne-based shipowner. Huddart Parker was not only a famous Australian interstate shipping company but also the only one to maintain a passenger line to New Zealand. Its coastal liners Westralia and Zealandia, trans-Tasman liners Ulimaroa and Wanganella and Bass Strait ferries Nairana and Taroona were all household names. The company also operated a fleet of interstate cargo ships, tugs at Melbourne and Port Adelaide, and excursion steamers on Port Phillip Bay. Besides shipping, it owned large coal mines, had shareholdings in many other companies, and was a pioneer investor in domestic aviation. This book records the history from the arrival of the founders during the gold rush of the 1850s, through the establishment of the company in 1876 to its takeover and withdrawal from shipping in 1961. There are appendices on the Bay excursion trade, James Huddart’s Canadian Australian Royal Mail Line, personalia, shore offices, tugs, collieries and the company’s venture into aviation, as well as a detailed fleet list and comprehensive index. It is a soft-cover publication (250 x 176 cm) of 248 pages with 135 illustrations of virtually all the cargo and passenger ships, Bay steamers and tugs.
