Author: Peter Newall, ISBN: 1 901703 46 0, Ref: 8472, Publisher: Ships in Focus Publications, 2004
For over 100 years Orient Line was one of the most progressive and innovative British shipping companies. It was also the premier passenger line between Britain and Australia carrying thousands of people in its sailing ships and steamers.
With a foreword by Lord Marshall, Chairman of British Airways and a former Orient Line purser, Orient Line a Fleet History traces for the first time the complete history of the company and its ships from the formation of Anderson, Thomson and Company in 1863 until the absorption of Orient Line into P&O in 1966 and the brief revival of its name between 1977 and 1987. Peter Newall, author of Union-Castle Line a Fleet History, has produced what will probably be the definitive history of the line with individual histories of 129 ships including all the sailing ships from 1863 onwards; liners and tugs owned by Orient Line; Pacific Steam Navigation Company ships used in the joint Orient Line service between 1878-1909; war managed vessels and the series of liquid gas carriers and bulkers from 1977-1987. Profusely illustrated with over 400 images, many of which have never appeared before (including 40 in colour), this 184 page book also includes unique information on Orient Line at Tilbury and Australian ports as well as twenty-one pages about life aboard from Orient to Oriana and a further nine pages on Orient liners under construction at Barrow-in-Furness. 230 pages, soft cover, 8½in x 11in, #6 in the West Coast Maritime Series
Examines the history, the present and the possible future of the British Columbia Marine Transportation industries and their interface with the other primary industries of the coast. In this extension of the original series, a broad account is given of ocean shipping and its partnership with B.C's export oriented economy.
This volume, by WSS member, Syd Heal, becomes the sxth book in the West Coast Maritime series. It looks at Vancouver and the smaller ports of B.C. as a distinct shipping market in its own right, generating export cargoes, receiving imports, originating charters, acting as a destination for a great variety of foreign shipping, serviced by a changing force of local branch offices and agencies, who now form a different mix in the Vancouver shipping market. It has become a central operating base for foreign ship owners taking advantage of the Vancouver International Maritime Centre. This account deals with windows of history in the period 1946 to the present era.

Hopefully, through this book and other, they will be enjoyed by thousands. (acknowledgement by Bill Miller). 160 pages. 8½ inches x 11 inches. Softcover. PESCA: A History of the Pioneer Modern Whaling Company in the Antarctic (The Compañia Argentina de Pesca Sociedad Anónima of Buenos Aires)
Author: Ian Hart (Foreword by Alexandra Shackleton, ISBN: 0 85628 299 5, Ref: 8521, Publisher: Aidan Ellis, 2001
PESCA is a fascinating, authoritative and impeccably researched account of the commercial activities of the pioneer company which exploited the vast natural resources of the great Southern and Antarctic Oceans. This is the story of a company, whose beginnings are unique in the annals of polar history: founded as the result of a Antarctic expedition mishap by a Norwegian whaling captain, funded by Argentine capital and established on the remote and uninhabited, windswept island of South Georgia laid claim to by the British. The narrative of PESCA embraces both political intrigue and commercial enterprise in the harshest of maritime environments, and the company's impact on the great Antarctic whaling industry and the bearing it had on British and Argentine political activity right up to the Falklands war.
Illustrated by photographs, many not previously published, PESCA is the story of men who had the courage to invest in an amazing polar enterprise and the bravery, skill and fortitude of the crews who made it pay. In many ways, the activities exemplified man's insatiable greed: the initial success, high hopes and vast profits founded on the slaughter of whales, which culminated in the decline of Pesca in the 1960s and final collapse. Ian Hart has had a long and passionate interest in the South Atlantic, in particular in the whaling and sealing activities. He first visited the Falkland Islands as a crew member of a Danish ship in 1962. In 1989 he was an invited member aboard the Royal Navy's ice-patrol ship HMS Endurance's expedition to South Georgia. In 1992 he was a member of a three-man team sent to South Georgia to establish a museum there, serving for the first four years as archivist and curator. He is a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. THIS IS NOT A WORLD SHIP SOCIETY PUBLICATION AND IS NOT AVAILABLE FROM THE SOCIETY. Published by Aidan Ellis, Salcombe, Devon, 2001. Revised and extended 100th Anniversary Edition 2004. 564 pages, 269 photographs, maps, drawings, graphs. 28 Appendices including complete Fleet List of Vessels owned by Pesca and subsidiaries. Published by the Bermuda Maritime Museum Press, this large format book details the history of Furness Bermuda Line, which existed from 1919 to 1966, and their most famous liner QUEEN OF BERMUDA. The story is told in 17 chapters, describing how the British Furness shipping organisation took over the regular passenger service between New York and Bermuda after World War One ended, and built it up into one of the most famous short passenger routes in the world with the Millionaire's Ships', MONARCH OF BERMUDA and QUEEN OF BERMUDA, during the 1930s.
Compiled by long-time WSS Branch member Peter Plowman and world-famous maritime artist Stephen Card, who were both born in Bermuda. This book is on general release only in Bermuda and some selected parts of the east coast of America, but will not generally be available in bookstores. Reading Seashore Lines, The: A Pictorial Documentary of the Atlantic City Railroad
Author: William J Coxey, James E. Kranefeld, ISBN: Ref: 8668, Publisher:
This is not a shipping book -- but a railway book, co-authored by WSS member William J. Coxey. The Reading gained access to southern New Jersey via its lease of the Central Railroad of New Jersey in the spring of 1883 followed six months later by the purchase of the failed narrow gauge Philadelphia & Atlantic City Railway. The distinctive "Reading look" soon became evident with the improvements and expansion of this operation, which officially became named the Atlantic City Railroad. This work, unlike our earlier book about the development and decline of the Atlantic City Railroad, covers primarily the physical railroad and adjacent structures from the beginning to the present. This offering is perfect for those interested in both railroad and local history. Perfect bound, 8 1/2" x 11" vertical format, 168 pages, 500 photographs, drawings, and maps (most never before published). Arranged geographically with station index. To order, contact: West Jersey Chapter, National Railway Historical Society, PO Box 647, Palmyra, NJ 08065-0647, USA. 'The 'Blue Riband'. a mythical trophy for the fastest ship on the Atlantic, has fascinated the public for almost 200 years. These ships and their stories have endeared themselves in the public imagination in a way that no other form of transport has done, and this superbly written [by WSS member Arnold Kludas] and illustrated book captures the story in the most compelling manner. This is truly the story of excess and extremes. Large-size format (12 inches x 9½ inches landscape format). 160 pages. Hardback. The Red Star Line, one of the oldest and best known shipping lines ever to send ships out to sail the oceans, was founded in 1872 and liquidated in 1935. All of the Red Star ships, bearing such famous names as the VADERLAND, WESTERNLAND, BELGENLAND, RHYNLAND, NEDERLAND and PENNLAND, sailed under the Belgian flag, although the Company was financed by Americans. The late Vernon E.W. Finch, a former WSS member, and once the youngest crew member on the Red Star ships, has written the whole story of this renowned shipping concern. His book is based on years of research, and contains many useful photographs of the Red Star ships, their interiors, their crews and the Red Star buildings. 151 pages. Fast amd graceful, reefer ships have always stood out from the other cargo ships plying the world's sea lanes. This magnificently illustrated book looks at the evolution of pure refreigerated ships and fruitships, and at the histories and fleets of the major owners involved in the reefer trades, including Lauritzen, Salen, Maritime Fruit Carriers, P&O, Blue Star, Geest, Seatrade, United Fruit and Fyffes. As well as being a valuable reference book for ships in service today, this book takes a nostalgic look at the classic reefers of the 1950s and 1960s, many of them regarded as among the most beautiful merchant ships ever built. The book includes more than 350 mostly previously unpublished black and white and colour photographs and plans and profile drawings. A detailed history of the salvage company founded by Risdon Archibald BEAZLEY, CBE, in 1926 until it ceased operations in 1981. The company’s recovery vessels travelled the world and had an international reputation. By 1944 they were operating more than 60 salvage ships from their Bitterne Manor base, where they also built 22 Fairmile MTB's. Of the 21 Admiralty salvage ships that crossed the channel on D-Day, 11 were managed by Risdon Beazley. One of their most noteworthy achievements was the recovery of the SS Great Britain in 1969 in the Falklands. This was the first ship of more than 1,000 tons to be salvaged on a submersible pontoon and its return to Bristol is the world record for the longest tow with that type of load by a stern trawler. This important part of our marine history is covered in depth and makes essential reading for any marine enthusiast. \r\n\r\nA4 format / 44 pages. Few places in the world incorporate such a rich collection of historical geographic names concentrated from two of the great naval battles of the Napoleonic wars and the era of Admiral Horatio Nelson, RN. Captain George Vancouver, RN and naval surveyor Captian Geroge Henry Richards RN, were primarily responsible for assembling this veritable panteon in remembrance of the names of admirals, fighting captains, some lowly able seamen and the mighty ships themselves. If the reader knows the purpose behind these names and understands their origin and some of the stories that attach to them, it almost becomes like visiting a giant outdoor museum. Their story is told by a leading maritime historian and author, who also takes an interst in the science of toponymy - the study of place names. The origins of the place names detailed in this book are told with the aid of reproductions from paintings of the period, some modern photos and useful sketch maps showing the locations. 5½ inches x 8½ inches. Paper cover. 86 pages.

With its huge internal waterway system, Russia has come to rely on shipping as a vital part of its transport network. This book uses photographs to illustrate the development since 1948 of the vessels which can navigate on both inland waterways and open seas. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union and its communist system in 1991, the ships have been seen beyond Russia in increasing numbers. The book sets the development of the ships in a historical, geographical and economic context, thanks to its easy-to-read captions. The book is profusely illustrated by 153 colour photographs. 'Sub-titled "The West Coast Tug & Barge Industry: Offshore and Overseas Operations". This is the fourth in the "West Coast Maritime Series". After WWII the big companies became more venturesome with offshore tows to Hawaii and California, into the Arctic, the North Sea and Red Sea. The Salvage tows of disabled vessels from the North Pacific are detailed. This quickly expanded to tows of obsolete vessels to Japan and then major tows of barges loaded with drill rigs around the world. It was a business which grew with the growth of deep-sea oil exploration and then it came to a halt almost as quickly. Oil and operating economics and political considerations resulted in a massive change of direction. West Coast tugs are still taking deep-sea voyages, but it is no longer a business of massive expansion and what remains is now foreign controlled. 8½ inches x 11 inches. 200 pages. Soft cover. Between 1932 and 1953, a fleet of ordinary cargo ships were pressed into extraordinary service to relocate approximately one million forced laborers to the Soviet Gulag in Kolyma, located along the Arctic Circle in far northeastern Siberia.
The Kolyma Gulag, the most infamous in the Soviet Union, was accessible only by sea, and this fleet became the lifeblood of the entire operation. As one of the largest seaborne movements of people ever, this transport took a devastating toll on human lives. Bollinger presents the often-horrific stories of the Gulag fleet and its passengers, and reveals for the first time the unwitting role of the US government in the operation. 240 pages. Hard cover. The drums of the First World War had barely subsided when the Karliner family migrated from Germany to British Columbia, eventually settling in South Vancouver. From Robert "Bob" Karliner's earliest years, necessity bred a strong work ethic and developed in him qualities of initiative and leadership that were to be a guiding light for the rest of his working life. Captain Karliner became a virtual legend in his own time as one of the small, innovative and highly competetitive elite of consistently high producers in the fishing industry known as the Highliners". The golden era of these highliners of an earlier period when the seas teamed with fish have now passed as a result of many factors, including natural, economic and geo-political that all add up to a shrunken fisheries economy. Overfishing and changes in public taste and demand have been factors leading to a vastly reduced wild fish processing and canning industry. Today there are real worries about the possible desappearance of several species along with a fishery-based way of life along the coast. Many boats have been withdrawn from the industry and construction of new vessels has virtually ceased. Ways and means of carving up the industry to protect the livlihoods of those who are now numbered among the survivors includes wider adoption of a quota system. In turn this also ensures that the incentives that ccreated the highliners are unlikely to ever return. While Bob Karliner has been at teh centre of it all, it also records the prsesence and involovement of the rest of his family, a true B.C. fishing family in every sense. The Karliner story is a biography like none other that has come out of the fishing industry and is presented in this volume as a significant contiribution to the history of commercial fishing on the West and East coast of Canada. 8½ inches x 11 inches. 192 pages. Man's thirst for gold was the initial incentive as entrepreneurs tried everything from river boats to Bactrian camels, to steam road traction engines. To open up the gold rich Cariboo a variety of small settlements developed peopled by gold miners, ranchers, transport and construction workers. These became dependent on the wagon train, the steam boat and the stage coach for their mail and supplies and there was no such thing as daily delivery at the door. These pioneers endured enormous discomforts in their tough way of life. All of this naturally constricted settlement and Canada's last Western frontier was not tamed until the construction of the Pacific Great Eastern railway in 1912 and the gradually improved highway system came into being. 200 pages. illustrated, indexed. Included in this book are scenes from a bygone age when the paddle steamer was King on the Clyde. THe advent of the motor car removed the need for many of the steamers and all that survives now are the essential ferry services. The name of the NB Stem Packet lives on, however, in the WAVERLEY. She is the last vestige of the Clyde's most colourful period and still runs pleasure cruises, using many piers that would otherwise lie unused and forgotten. 128 pages. 6½ inches x 9 inches. Alistair Deayton takes us on another tour of Clyde pleasure steamers, looking at the ships of Williamson Buchanan and Turbine Steamers Ltd., two of the major independent players on the Clyde. The Williamson-Buchanan steamers served the routes 'doon the watter' from the centre of Glasgow to the Clyde Coast resorts, whilst the ships of Turbine Steamers covered long-distance day excursions to Inveraray and Campbeltown. The book also includes the steamers of the Lochoil Company and the two magnificent paddle steamers called LORD OF THE ISLES. From Arran to Rothesay and all ports in between, we're taken on a nostalgic trip back to the days when steam was King on the Clyde and when you could travel from Arran to Glasgow in less than two hours. A special chapter is given to the development of the White Funnel tirbines, which saw the world\'s first steam-turbine-powered passenger ship, KING EDWARD, sail on the Clyde. The author, one of the foremost experts on Scottish coastal shipping, here shares part of his extensive collection of images of Scottish ferries and paddle steamers. 165mm x 235mm. 160 pages. At the turn of the century, countless steam ships and steam boats were to be seen around the coasts of Europe and working on the inland rivers and lakes. Though that is no longer the case, a surprising number of passenger vessels are still in steam, while many others, now converted to diesel, remain in operation. WSS member Alister Deayton describes all the one hundred or so operting steam ships, some two hundred conversions, and a number of statically preserved vessels. He lists them ship by ship and country by country, and in doing so describes the vessels, their passenger profiles, routes and areas of operation. Steam Ships of Europe is the first comprehensive survey of all these vessels and an indispensable guide for the ship lover and traveller alike. 192 pages. 8 inches x 11 inches. Hardcover. The book, which is hardback 10 x 8 format, contains over 150 pages and is well illustrated throughout in both black and white and colour. It is divided into two sections, the first details the development of the Group from its origins in 1939 as a trading company, through its first shipowning experience in 1946 to the integrated shipping and trading group of today. The second part of the book deals with nearly 300 ship identities (allowing for re-namings) in the usual Society format. Although it should be stressed that this is not a World Ship Society publication, a considerable amount of the book was completed and researched by Society member Bill Harvey in conjunction with the Company.

The first order for a warship at 'Swans' was placed in 1907. There then followed a steady stream of orders, peaking during the course of the two World Wars and culminating with the orders in 2000 for two Auxiliary Landing Ships (Logistic) and the subsequent debacle. During this intervening period, the actual organisation behind the shipbuilding effort changed on a number of occasions, albeit the name of 'Swans' remained to the fore. Following on from Swan Hunter's final withdrawal from shipbuilding in 2006, this book is a nostalgic look at a proud heritage of shipbuilding on the Tyne.

In 1993 the world famous Tyne shipbuilder Swan Hunter was plunged into receivership when it failed to win a vital order. Mass redundancies among its proud workforce followed and it seemed shipbuilding on the Tyne had finally ended. However, the company's Wallsend Yard was rescued at the eleventh hour and today a new Swan's has arisen from the ashes of the old. Swan Hunter: The Pride and the Tears tells a compelling story of men, ships, achievements and heartache. Ian Rae, maritime historian, worked for 31 years in the design engineering department of Swan Hunter.
