Part VI follows the usual pattern of books in this series consisting of 97 photographs of USN warships with the earliest dating from the 1920s. The photographs of ships moored in huge rows emphasises the size of the USN relative to contemporary navies. Approximately two thirds of the illustrations have been obtained from various official sources with the remainder coming from private collections. Few of these photographs will be familiar to readers in the UK and, for those interested in USN ships, this is a magnificent album. The most recent in a fascintating series of nbooks containing nearly 100 photographs of ships and submarines laid up, wrecked or being sunk as targets as well as en route to and at various scrapyards. This particular album mainly portrays British ships of the post war ear with that of BEAVER being taken in a Turkish shipbreaking yard in 2001. There are four exceptions including the wrecks of the cruiser RALEIGH and the destroyer TORRID that date from 1922 and 1937 respectively. As usual, all the photographs are of a high standard and come from both official and private sources. Recommended. [RHO] Softback. This book provides basic information about the ships which served in the US Navy during and before World War I, including the Spanish-American War. 1883 is an appropriate starting place as this was the year that funds were first appropriated for construction of modern naval vessels after a long period of decline following the Civil War. These ships and those that followed them, called the “New Navy”, were mostly still in service in 1917 when America came into the war that had been raging for three years. 304 pages. Author: Paul H. Silverstone, ISBN: n/a, Ref: 8569, Publisher: , 1965 (re-printed 1989)
This is a most comprehensive handbook on the United States naval forces in World War II. It is not a history - although naturally, it contains much of interest to the historian. It is rather a complete and detailed survey of all the major ships and most support vessels of both the US Navy and Coast Guard. The American fleet during World War II was large and varied ranging from heavy battleships and aircraft carriers to auxiliary craft such as submarine tenders and attack cargo ships. All types and classes have been included in this profusely illustrated reference book. 444 pages. THIS IS NOT A WORLD SHIP SOCIETY PUBLICATION AND IS NOT AVAILABLE FROM THE SOCIETY.
Author: Paul Silverstone, ISBN: ???, Ref: 8570, Publisher: , 1986
In this book, Paul Silverstone indicates the phenomenal naval power of the world’s foremost industrial nation. From the submarines carrying part of the US strategic nuclear defense to the global reach of the carrier task forces - as proven by US intervention in Korea, Vietnam and the Middle East - he shows that the US Navy is a potent yet balanced service, with cruisers, escorts and auxiliaries all being given their share of attention in the naval programs. There is also a section on the US Coast Guard. Accompanying the detailed text are over 200 photographs covering the complete range of vessels. 239 pages. This beautiful book is published by The SS UGANDA Trust. The introduction of sisterships KENYA and UGANDA brought new standards to British India's service between London and East Africa in the early 1950's. This book tells the story of the lives of UGANDA with supplementary information about her owners and associated ships. Much of the information is anecdotal, supplied enthusiastically by the people who remember her. When Japan unleashed its attack on Pearl Harbor and commenced the invasion of the Philippines and South East Asia, it undertook one of the greatest gambles in military and naval history. The fact that it failed is no reflection on the country's merchant marine and its merchant mariners. They did their duty to their country without flinching. This was in spite of enormous losses in ships and crews aggravated by mistakes in naval planning and the fact that the national resource in merchant shipping was often squandered. Proportionate to the size of wartime economies, the Japanese merchant shipping fleets took the heaviest losses of any of the belligerent powers. It is small wonder that an emergency ship replacement program was hastily instituted using designs conceived for maximum economy and the fastest possible assembly. The results were ships that were short on quality and built out of class, with which the Japanese sought to fill the breaches. Something like two thirds of the war-built ships did not live to see peacetime service. The survivors, following varying degrees of post war reconstruction, became the mainstay of the Japanese merchant marine until new postwar ships came along. The most visible single class of ship on the Allied side was the Liberty ship. The Japanese Type-A ship was its rough equivalent and the one most likely to be seen on international trade routes following the war. This book seeks to correctly place the wartime merchant ships of Japan into their proper context as valuable supports for the country's war effort and the mainstay of its peactime recovery for a few short years after the return to peace. 6 inches x 9 inches. Ann Haynes (nee Williams) was a Purserette at sea for 2 years with The Union-Castle Mail Steamship Co. Ltd. in the mid-1960s, and wrote home to her parents regularly. These letters were subsequently published as "Union-Castle Line Purserette" in October 1999, a book with lots of photographs, End of Voyage Logs, lists of people she sailed with and met, and pictures of those wonderful lavender-hulled vessels. With the Company's Centenary Voyage taking place in December 1999, she felt it was an appropriate time to share 'a laugh on the ocean wave' with others, and to enjoy a little bit of nostalgia for one of the greatest shipping lines ever - The Union-Castle Mail Steamship Company Limited. Author: Ian Farquhar, ISBN: 0 9597834 7 4, Ref: 8086, Publisher: New Zealand Ship & Marine Society (Inc.), 1976
Published by the New Zealand Ship & Marine Society (Inc.). In 1875 James Mills and a group of Dunedin merchants founded a shipping line that would last 125 years. Backed by Scottish and English capital and technical knowhow, the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand Limited quickly established itself as Australasia's pre-eminent shipping line. Ny 1890 it dominated the New Zealand coastal, the Trans Tasman and the Tasmanian runs and traded also to India, the Pacific Islands and to North America. Since 1968 "Union Fleet" has been the authoritative guide to this company's fascinating fleet. For this greatly enlarged third edition, maritime historian, and WSS member, Ian Farguhar has updated entries and assembled hundreds of illustrations of the ships owned by the company, together with a generous selection of ships chartered or managed by it. Now in one publication can be found famous liners such as the ROTOMAHANA and the legendary AWATEA as well as the hundreds of other liners, ferries, freighters and specialist ships that once dominated the Australasian shipping scene. The following is from a review in Marine News, April 2002 -- Readers will be familiar with the two earlier editions of this work, in 1968 and 1976. Now, as the last of the Union ships is sold, this may well prove to be the definitive 3rd edition of the fleet built to servie New Zealand. The author, for years a leading figure in New Zealand's maritime industry as well as a recognised shipping historian and author, has produced a valuable work for New Zeland's shipping libray, to stand alongside volumes such as "The Southern Octopus". The major part, 210 pages, is a fleet list from formation in 1875 to 1999. The outstanding feature is the nearly complete photo coverage, in the period to 1900 only four are wanting, and for one of these an exact sister is illustrated. Although the fleet does not include physical data to the extent of the WSS lists, the strong point is the extent of ownership data until lost or scrapped. Much effort has been expended in confirming dates of sale and loss. The fleet list is preceded by an 11 page chronology detailing significant dates and events in company history, made all the fuller by access to an increased volume of company records in recent years. ... A highly recommended volume, the result of 50 years of research, which will be invaluable to all with an interest in New Zealand maritime matters. 297 pages. 7½ inches x 10 inces (182mm x 258mm). Hard cover. THIS IS NOT A WORLD SHIP SOCIETY PUBLICATION AND IS NOT AVAILABLE FROM THE SOCIETY. Warriors and Wizards: the development and defeat of radio controlled glide bombs of the Third Reich
Author: Martin J. Bolinger, ISBN: 978 1591140672, Ref: 8752, Publisher: US Naval Institute Press, 2010
In August 1943 the Luftwaffe began using radio-controlled anti-ship glide bombs, and within weeks they had sunk one battleship, crippled another, wrecked two cruisers, and destroyed numerous merchant ships. Yet a year later the Germans abandoned their use, defeated in part by electronic systems to jam the radio links that guided the bombs. Drawing on a wealth of new sources, Martin Bollinger examines what happened from both a historical and technological perspective and lays out a mission-by-mission analysis of effectiveness. Based on interviews with participants, intelligence documents, and archival records in four countries, his book chronicles the yearlong battle between Allied seamen and Luftwaffe airmen (the warriors) and German and Allied scientists (the wizards) for a story of courage, technical achievement, and sacrifice.
Martin J. Bollinger has been a management consultant in the aerospace and defense industry for twenty-five years. A resident of Great Falls, VA, he is also the author of Stalin's Slave Ships.

With this book a well-known warship expert with years of experience collecting hard-to-find data offers a convenient, one-stop source of information for Civil War buffs, ship enthusiasts, and scholars. It provides, for the first time in one place, a compilation of statistical data, war service, and histories of every vessel in both the Federal and Confederate navies. 271 pages. One of many books authored by WSS member David K. Brown which is genuinely outstanding with high academic value but are also accessible to the amateur. David, who is genuinely recognised for his knowledge worldwide is to be congratulated for bringing the "mysteries" of warship design and development to non-technical layman. Author: Roy Fenton, Philip Robertson, ISBN: 978 1 901703 57 3, Ref: 8733, Publisher: Ships in Focus Publications, 2009
For over 120 years, the fleet of William Robertson was a major force in coastal tramp shipping. With up to fifty ships in its fleet, it was for many years the most important operator on the British West Coast. Although it lost its independence in the 1970s, echoes of it remained into the 21st century with 'gem' names in the Stephenson Clarke fleet, and many people remember the company with affection. This book does the company's history full justice, covering its ships, their trades, the Robertson family, reminiscences of employees, its involvement with quarrying, and also considers its performance as a business. But the ships, all named after gems or minerals, are the stars of the book. All 107 steamers, 26 motor coasters, 13 sailing ships and 21 managed vessels are fully detailed, and whenever possible illustrated, many at different stages of their careers. Amongst the many photos are some unique images from the company's archives showing casualties, launches and other occasions. There are also eight pages in colour.

THE STORY BEHIND THE WORLD's PASSENGER FLEET, VOLUME SIX After a five year hiatus, it was time to add another installment to my ongoing video series, "THE WORLD's PASSENGER FLEET. VOLUME SIX" took a long time to arrive due to several factors, primarily my unforgiving schedule and a desire to incorporate the latest in computer video editing technology. Unfortunately, learning the basics of this program, Final Cut Pro, did not happen overnight. Early this year, a revised version called Final Cut Express was released with an excellent tutorial. Suddenly, I "got" it and was off to the races! Now, it is only a matter of months, not years, before VOLUME SIX is joined by SEVEN and EIGHT. I will be then will begin to revise the first five as well as start a new series entitled "Let's Go Aboard", showcasing on board footage of select ships from my travels including ACHILLE LAURO, ALFERDOSS, and SHANGHAI to PRINCE GEORGE, LEONID SOBINOV, and dozens of other obscure and/or dearly departed classics. To the audience that embraced the first five videos, little has changed as far as the content and structure are concerned. As with the others, the latest installment features exterior footage of fifty ships in one hour, presented in alphabetical order with basic titles, a background music soundtrack and my voice as narration. A number of technical improvements have been made, however. With digital technology, some footage has been manipulated for a better presentation. Transitions are now abundant, and a multilayered soundtrack has enabled me to mix live sounds with music and the narration, allowing for an occasional ship's whistle to prevail. The earliest footage dates from 1997 and continues all the way to 2003. All footage before December 1998 was transferred to digital, and all footage from December 1998 was originally shot on digital format.
A review by Anthony Cooke, author -- "Anyone who has seen PK at work, festooned with cameras, has to admire his sheer bubbling enthusiasm and his persistence in making a record of these ships which will soon have vanished - some of them already have, of course. Several of my favourites are in Vol. 6, including DOLPHIN IV (I always had a soft spot for her in the days when she was operating in the British market as the ITHACA), STAR OF VENICE (well, I used to think she was great when she was the LEDA) and WORLD RENAISSANCE. Oh, and lots more. By the way, British ship lovers needn't shy away - it's available in the British PAL format." THIS IS NOT A WORLD SHIP SOCIETY PUBLICATION AND IS NOT AVAILABLE FROM THE SOCIETY. WSS member Jim Davis' obsession with ships began at the age of 3 or 4 and thereafter he develops this theme with vigour, but there is an appropriate blend between career and personal elements. He describes the dangers and circumstances of his childhood war experiences, his somewhat protracted bachelorhood and relationship with his mother and her death. He goes on to describe his loved wife and family, details of his years in shipping, to the present where there is no longer any major U.K. shipping company left. He is now engaged in the real Global Maritime World. The author gives us a time mix of the amusing, the poignant and the dramatic.
This book is not to be missed. The reader is never permitted to become bored with the book, but instead is drawn into the text. The variety is a key to its success.
