Notwithstanding the fact that there was, and still is a great interest in tugs, their owners, and their opertions on and around the rivers Tyne, Blyth and Wear, it is surprising that, as far as is known, no history has ever been written about them. This volume sets out, in nineteen chapters, to correct this omission by relating the story of all those companies which by liquidation, take-over, absorption or acquistion have formed part of the family tree which descends to the presen-day company of Lawson-Batey Tugs Ltd. WSS member Ambrose Greenway's love-affair with Channel steamers began during childhood visits to Newhaven and Folkstone in the early 1950s and continues to the present day. The first half of the 19th century witnessed the establishement of many shipping companies, some of which introduced regular services linking the major seaports bordering the North Sea. These services soon began to attract passengers, and subsequently secondary, often seasonal, services were developed to cater for an interest in tourism engendered by the new-found wealth of the Victorian era. Throughout the earlier part of the period under review westbound carryings were greatly augmented by large numbers of emigrants in specially fitted tweendecks. Ship development falls into two separate categories.
The shorter routes nearer to the English Channel tended to favour the faster type of 'Channel packet', often paddle and later turbine propelled, though the longer overnight services from Harwich did eventually evolve their own particular type of long-foc'sled ship. The northern routes on the other hand, being longer and more exposed, required rather more sturdy construction, generally of welldeck or three-island design. In his companion to A Century of Cross Channel Passenger Ferries, WSS member Ambrose Greenway charts the history of the North Sea passenger trade trhrough the operating companies and their ships, and his expert examination is accompanied by numerous rare and revealing illustrations. 170 mm x 240 mm. 144 pages. Hard cover. THIS IS NOT A WORLD SHIP SOCIETY PUBLICATION AND IS NOT AVAILABLE FROM THE SOCIETY. Published by Ian Allan, Ltd. Out of Print.

A Century of Sea Travel: Personal Accounts from the Steamship Era
Author: Christopher Deakes & Tom Stanley, ISBN: 978 1 8832 0891, Ref: 8762, Publisher: Seaforth Publishing http://wwwseaforthpublishing.com
THIS BOOK IS A VOYAGE THROUGH the life of the passenger steamship, a voyage described by travellers who sailed on these vessels, and it carries within it their thoughts and experiences, mirrored here in words and pictures. The pictures are memories of ships and places in times gone by, glimpses of steamship travel through the years. In memoirs and letters home, diaries and journals the writers recorded every aspect of their seagoing experiences: they wrote of their ship, its crew and their fellow passengers, of the food and entertainment on board, of romance, accidents and disasters, and of being dreadfully sick. They noted incidents on board that amused or angered them, described the ports at which their ship called, and the fear and excitement of storms at sea. The writers were emigrants or colonial rulers, men of letters, young men seeking their fortune, wives on their way to new homes abroad; some were rich, many were poor and escaping the hardship of downtrodden lives; all had in common the experience of voyaging at sea. The author has woven their words into a narrative that describes so evocatively a world that has now disappeared, and with the huge range of illustrations brings back to life the golden age of the steamship.Beautifully designed and printed, this book will delight armchair travellers, ship enthusiasts and all those who still go to sea to seek romance and adventure.

A Great Fleet of Ships: The Canadian Forts & Parks
Available from many maritime-oriented booksellers or direct from Cordillera Books, 102-8708 French Street, Vancouver, BC V6P 4W7, Canada - or e-mail: richbook@shaw.ca
While the extent of Canada's war production effort, 1939-45, is fairly well known to Canadians, one aspect of it has largely, and inexplicably, escaped notice. This is the construction in Canadian shipyards, from a standing start in 1941, of 402 merchant ships, most of them 10,000-ton carge ships. They were launched from seven yards on the west coast and eight on the east coast, St. Lawrence River and Great Lakes. On a comparative scale, it was a feat rivalling that of the Unided States. Here, the author describes the technical factors involved in the design of these ships, their construction and operation.
A Great Fleet of Ships explains how this potential merchant fleet in being at the war's end was dispersed, so that Canada's merchant marine all but vanished after 1950. Heal discusses the rationale involved in its disposal and provides the reader with an insightful look at the complex subjects of marine underwwriting and chartering. The book also recalls incidents through detailed eye-witness accounts and reminiscences of wrecks, war losses, globe-girdling voyages and a variety of personal experiences by individuals who served aboard.
A special feature of the book is a complete Fleet List of all the ships, with concise details of their builders, their subsequent name changes, ownership changes and their fates. A unique part of this listing relates each ship to the geographical and historical features which gave rise to its name. The author was born at Remnes, near Tonsberg, Norway in 1921, the son of subsistance farmers, but like most Norwegians the call of the sea was very strong and fully in the traditions of his Viking forebearers. He first went to sea as a messboy in a Norwegian whale factory ship to the Antarctic. By 1940 he was a crewman in the motor cargo liner Moldanger, a motorship trading worldwide. War came and Revaa was cut off from his native land. Fate intervened when Moldanger was torpedoed not far from the East Coast of the United States. This is his interesting story of a life at sea, including 48 harrowing days on an open raft until rescued. Mr. Revaa settled in Surrey, B.C. and passed away there in 2002. 107 pages. 6 in x 9 in. paper cover. Fully illustrated. Armed Merchant Cruisers (AMCs) performed many essential functions during both World Wars but their vulnerability in action gained them the unfortunate sobriquet of “Admiralty Made Coffins”. Despite their obvious limitations, the AMCs of the 10th Cruiser Squadron played a significant role in defeating Germany during the 1914 – 1918 conflict, while, in both wars, AMCs substituted for regular cruisers and escorts engaged in patrol and escort work. This book explores the origins, capabilities and uses of AMCs in 1885, 1914 – 1918 and 1939 – 45 as well as explaining the reasons for their demise during the latter conflict. This hardcover, 328 page, A4 book, which is illustrated by 262 monochrome photographs, contains four discrete parts, the first of which is devoted to HMS HECLA (1878). Part two explores the origins of the employment of steam powered merchant armed cruisers, including the 16 ships hired during the Russian war scare of 1885, and the introduction of Government subsidises to encourage the construction of mercantile tonnage which could be employed in a cruising role in wartime. Part three is devoted to work of AMCs during the 1914-1918 conflict, ranging from the vital blockade duties performed by the AMCs of the 10th Cruiser Squadron to operations in the South Atlantic and elsewhere. Part four, which covers the period from 1920 – 1945, describes how the Admiralty encouraged the construction of ships pre-stiffened to receive 6-inch guns, the effect of the collapse of the International Mercantile Marine on the availability of potential AMCs, the requisitioning, outfitting and operational use of AMCs during the Second World War and the competing interests that led to the demise of the Royal Navy’s force of AMCs during 1942 – 1944. The volume is completed by 7 appendices that detail (1) ships receiving subsidises prior to World War I, (2) the movements of the 10th Cruisers Squadron during 1914 - 1917, (3) a list of ships stiffened by 1933, (4) requisitioning and conversion dates in 1939 – 1940 and AMCs involved in escorting (5) HX/BHX, (6) SC and (7) SL/SLF convoys. Churchill famously claimed that the submarine war in the Atlantic was the only compaign of WW2 that really frightened him; had the life-line to North America been cut, Britain would never have survived, and there would have been no build-up of US and Commonwealth forces, and no victory in Europe.
The battle of the Atlantic was also arguably the hardest-fought campain of the War, during which the balance of advantage seesawed between U-boats and escorts. This new, large-format, heavily illustrated book analyses the ships, weaponry and tactics of the defending navies, and describes in detail the slopps, frigates, corvettes and destroyers that finally defeated the U-boat menace.
Based on a lifetime's experience of desining warships, D K Brown's judgements are enlightening for historian and enthusiast alike and the book is an important contribution to the history of this titanic struggle. THIS IS NOT A WORLD SHIP SOCIETY PUBLICATION, AND IS NOT AVAILABLE FROM THE SOCIETY.

AUS-SHIPS Second Edition, August 2010 - A CD listing of past and present Australian merchant ships – “A work in progress”, compiled by WSS member Tony Starke.
Compiler: Tony Starke, ISBN: n/a, Ref: 8769
Tony and his team of helpers have gathered details of more than 3,200 powered vessels over 100 g.t., registered in Australia from the 1830s to the present, together with photos of at least 50% of them. Information includes: official number, gross tonnage, where, when and by whom built, builder’s yard number, type of engines, length and breadth. Former and subsequent names and owners are given, together with the vessel’s fate and relevant dates.
An appendix prepared by Malcolm Dippy lists ships built by 23 Australian shipbuilders, while brief details are also provided of Australian owned ships registered overseas.
This CD consolidates information contained in the first (2008) edition of AUS-SHIPS with new material – over 400 new entries and many more photographs, plus additional or amended information that has come to light over the past two years on previously listed vessels. Though gaps remain, it is considered to be more than 90% complete, and work is ongoing to achieve a total and accurate coverage.
AUS-SHIPS has been prepared as a “Word” document in MS Windows XP. MAC users may therefore experience difficulties in opening the document.
Future editions (the next, hopefully, in 2012) will expand the coverage to include many smaller vessels and possibly also warships, and will also be made available in PDF format.
Fellow WSS member Rex Cox is now handling the marketing of the CD on behalf of Tony Starke, so general enquiries should be directed to: -

Peter Plowman's book "Emigrant Ships to Luxury LIners" was published in 1992, and sold steadily until 2004, when supplies were exhausted. Rather than reprint that book, he decided to produce a new book that concentrated solely on the migrant ships that served Australia from 1946 to 1977, as they are still a source of great interest to many people, especially those who travelled on them, and their families. This new book contains many new pictures as well as updated information. 8¼ inches x 11½ inches. 144 pages. Soft cover paperbound. THIS IS NOT A WORLD SHIP SOCIETY PUBLICATION AND IS NOT AVAILABLE THROUGH THE SOCIETY. Published by Rosenberg Publishing Pty Ltd, PO Box 6125, Dural Delivery Centre NSW 2158, Australia.
This is a re-print of the original World Ship Society publication. For generations the letters B.I. represented the major British shipping company in Eastern waters. They were said to stand for "building increase" and the substance behind this claim showed in the greatest number of ships owned by one company under the British flag -- 126 in 1914, 161 in 1920. Whatever type of ships interest you, B.I. had them all -- passenger liners, cargo liners, short-sea traders, paddle steamers, tugs, colliers, coasters, tankers, turrets and troopships. This A4 size book records all 507 ships to have carried the black funnel with two white bands and to have flown the white swallow-tail flag with red cross. For the first time the ships' careers are told in narrative as well as statistical form together with a chronology of the principal events in the Company's history. Details are also given of its services, derivations of the ships' names, and of the cadet ships and managed vessels. 256 pages and over 500 photographs, many previously unpublished. ALTHOUGH THE ORIGINAL PUBLICATION (Ref: 0096 - under "Publication History") WAS PUBLISHED BY THE WORLD SHIP SOCIETY, THIS REPRINT IS NOT. The Print-on-Demand reprint is available from the publishers, Ninety North Publishers, 10 Coldbath Square, London, EC1R 5HL, UK, or by e-mail enquiry to info@ninetynorth.com [2008]
Thirty years after the demise of one of Britain’s biggest shipowners – British India Steam Navigation – a major work of reference on the company and its ships is being published in electronic format. The new edition of ‘Laxon & Perry’ which has become the bible of the fleet which was known throughout eastern waters, contains updates by the surviving co-author Bill Laxon (and WSS member), a leading authority on merchant shipping companies of the period. Publisher Ninety North believes it is one of the first maritime reference ebooks published in the UK, if not the English-speaking world. Bound in PDF files, the ebook contains added material including additional photographs and a foreword by the present Earl of Inchcape, whose family name was tied so closely to that of BI and P&O.
It was the first Inchcape – formerly James Lyle Mackay – who cleverly engineered the merger of BI and P&O interests in 1914, leaving him as founding chairman of the combine and BI to become, in many people’s minds at least, ‘Inchcape’s Navy’. British India SN went on to reach its shipowning zenith in the early 1920s when the fleet numbered more than 160 vessels of 830,000 tons gross. After that, the decline was almost continuous but even in 1970, just before BI was totally absorbed into P&O and lost its own identity, the fleet was still nearly 50-strong. The company traced its history back to 1856. From that year through to the company's demise in 1972, there was barely a year when BI was not building or acquiring new tonnage. New technology has made possible the publication of Laxon & Perry in this novel format. The book is contained on a CD and the files are sealed until the user acquires and pays for access. Once open, the files are searchable so that any word or name can be found. The disc also contains an audio introduction by Bill Laxon and a short slide show of some interesting BI ships. The new edition contains all the ships’ particulars, text and pictures of the original printed version, comprising several chapters and essays on BI’s history and services, plus details of the 700 ships which BI owned or managed during its 116-year existence. They are vessels of an exceptionally wide variety and include ships of the largest passenger capacity then built. The book has an extraordinary amount of detail, painstakingly researched over several decades by Bill Laxon and Fred Perry. The five ships – NEURALIA, DUNERA, DEVONIA, NEVASA and UGANDA – which pioneered BI’s successful venture in educational cruising, and which carried thousands of British school children, are fully described, along with the many BI ships which served under government orders in 28 military expeditions, campaigns and peace-time trooping activities. For more than a century the BI initials and the black funnel with two white bands represented a name synonymous with quality and service. Now, as a fitting sequel 'Laxon and Perry', the reference work preferred by historians researching BI's fleet and history, is available again. BI – British India Steam Navigation Company Limited, by W A Laxon and F W Perry. Notes: 1. * 700 owned and managed ships described. * All BI's fleet with principal particulars. * More than 500 pictures of ships. * Updated with latest information. * Foreword by the Earl of Inchcape. * Searchable electronic edition. * Extra photos & 1968 BI services added. 2.The CD containing the book’s files is distributed free. Beneath the Surface: Submarines Built in Seattle and Vancouver, 1909-1918
Author: Bill Lightfoot, (foreword by) Roland H. Webb, ISBN: 1 895590 31 0, Ref: 8507, Publisher: Cordillera Books, 2005
This is the fascinating story of the only navy submarines ever constructed on the North Pacific Coast, a story of vision and entrepreneurship, of guts and bravery. Why, where, when, and how did these "technical marvels," these "little divers" these "deathtraps" come into being? What were they like? How were they used and by whom? Most of the story has never been told. It's a story of Paterson, world famous naval architect and the person chiefly responsible for building them, of the political and strategic climate that brought them here and of Imperial Russia's secret construction in British Columbia. It's the story of contemporary construction methods, of the mechanisms and equipment, of accommodations for living and the way of life aboard these primiteve vessels, of progressive designs and of the unique Chilean boats that so disappointed the Chilean Naval Mission.
The story of operations exposes episodes of daring, adventure, hardship and hazard. One of these submarines became the first submarine loss of the United States Navy and another sank her sister ship, one was dragged overland to be launched anew a second time, five ended up on the bottom of the Baltic Sea. Six were disassembled in Vancouver and re-asembled in Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, two were spirited away to Canada resulting in considerable political fallout, two, along with two from San Francisco, became the first U.S. Navy vessels to home port in Hawaii. Two became the first British warships to transit the Panama Canal, and six hunted U-boats in the Atlantic. They all challenged the sturdy submariners who volunteered to man them. 325 pages. 8½ inches x 11 inches. Soft cover. True stories of excitement and adventure from the time when ocean steamers plied their trade to the far-flung corners of the globe. The author has supplemented a selection of contemporary newspaper articles with background information from sources such as reports of Marine Courts of Inquiry.

224 pages, Hardback, 289mm x 245mm, 180 b/w photos & 45 line drawings. Probably no type of ship has ever provided more firepower per ton than the monitor. Designed and built rapidly to fulfil an urgent need for heavy shore-bombardment during World War I, they were top secret in conception, and largely forgotten when the short-lived requirement was over. Nevertheless, they were important ships, which played a significant role in many Great War campaigns and drove many of the advnaces in long-range gunnery later applied to the battle fleet.
Monitors were largely ignored by naval historians until Ian Buxton produced the first edition of this book in 1978. This became an established classic and copies are now almost unobtainable, so this new edition will be welcomed by many. It has been completely revised, extended and redesigned, the generous large format showing the stunning collection of photographs at their best. As a professional seaman, the author had many years at sea befoe swallowing the anchor. Life at sea prior to the event of containerisation was a mixture of hard work and runs ashore ... sadly a way of life unrecognisable from current times. Many serving and former seafarers may well recognise themselves in print for this is a story of an adventurous way of life offered to the sons of a once great seafring nation. An enjoyable book. 236 pages. Softcover. THIS IS NOT A WORLD SHIP SOCIETY PUBLICATION AND IS NOT AVAILABLE FROM THE SOCIETY. Contact your local bookseller for current prices and availability.
This is the first in the "West Coast Maritime Series". Boomsticks & Towlines is the first in this planned series of four books by WSS member S.C. Heal. It deals primarily with early navigation, with getting the logs to market, servicing the logging camps and adds interesting representative contributions from other sources which aided the process. It brings the reader into close contact with the many phases of the industry, including the evolution of log barges, roll-on, roll-off operations and the gradual changes on the coast which now see local cruise voyaging growing. Bosphorus Steamers of the Sirket-i Hayriye, The / Sirket-i Hayriye'nin Bogaziçi Vapurlari
Author: Ahmet Güleryüz, Hande Yüce, ISBN: 975 92686 1 2, Ref: 8436, Publisher: Denizler Kitabevi, Dec 2002 (http://www.denizlerkitabevi.com )
The Bosphorus has always been a subject that has occupied an extraordinary place both in Turkish and World literature. With it’s natural beauty and with the palaces, mansions, villas and waterside residences that adorn its banks, it has been a favourite topic for many Turkish and foreign authors and poets. Nevertheless, there are very few words devoted to the tens of thousands of ships which have crossed the Bosphorus strait on their way from the Black Sea to the Marmara Sea and from the Marmara Sea to the Black Sea for hundreds of years, and especially to the Sirket-i Hayriye ferries which are considered to be "The Bosphorus Steamers". In this book you will find technical descriptions and individual histories of each and every one of "The Bosphorus Steamers". A short history of the Sirket-I Hayriye Company is also included. The publishers put great effort into making this book a valuable reference work for enthusiasts and maritime researchers. This is a 210 page, A4 landscape hardback dual Turkish/English language book which is fully illustrated with plans and photographs of all the Bosphorus Steamers. Author: Brian Cudahy, ISBN: 978 0 8232 2568 2, Ref: 8544, Publisher: Fordham University Press, New York, 2006
In this book, transporation expert Brian Cudahy provides a vivid, fast-paced account of the container-ship revolution -- from the maiden voyage of the IDEAL X, which steamed from Berth 28 in Port Newark, New Jersey, flying the flag of the Pan-Atlantic Steamship Company with 58 trailer trucks lashed to her top deck. Pan-Atlantic grew into the giant Sea-Land Services, and Cudahy brilliantly charts its dramatic evolution into Maersk Line. Unfortunately, the author has focused on this one company and given the impression that this was "The" first attempt at containerisation, which is widely disputed. 6 inches x 9¼ inches. 338 pages. Orders and construction in both the Royal Dockyards and in commercial yards are covered. The author has gone back to the original sources to produce an authoritative history. Canadian Capers: A Seaman's Account of Intrigues and Voyages through the Corporate Jungle

Svein Stokke was seven years old when the Nazi invasion of Norway took place. Living near Narvik, a strategic iron ore port he was a living witness to much of the Allied response to the enemy which resulted in the two battles of Narvik. Following a sea career Stokke arrived in Vancouver by sea as an officer in a Norwegian freighter. A job ashore with Canadian Transport Company, service with Star Bulk and a return to CTC followed as Operations Manager. The scandal that overtook CTC followed and shook parent McMillan Bloedel to its foundations. Heads rolled and Stokke was fired followed by a successful lawsuit against MB for wrongful dismissal. Stokke went on to service with Seaspan International overseas operations, moving oversize drill rigs on semi-submersible barges halfway around the world. He shaped the early events which later saw Seaspan Corporation established as one of the largest container ship owners in North America. Captain Stokke joins maritime historian S.C. Heal in this account of events, dripping with red ink, that shook the stock market and destroyed careers, but out of it all Svein Stokke recovered like the proverbial phoenix. 250 pages. 6 in x 9 in, paper cover. 100+ photos. From the mid-nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century, the cargo liner grew, to dominate the world's trade routes. These ships carried much of the world's manufactured goods and raw materials to every corner of the globe. In the 1850s routes around Europe and across the North Atlantic were established. The Liverpool ship owner and engineer, Alfred Holt, developed high-pressure compound engines, which later allowed coal-powered vessels to steam even further afield; to the Far East and Australia. This book brings together the largest selection of Clan Line photographs ever published, together with highly detailed captions and commentaries plus a fleet list researched mainly from primary sources. What is expected to be the definitive history of the ships of Clan Line also includes the fleets taken over in 1919 from Houston and Scottish Shire Line, and ships acquired and put in Clan colours in the latter years of the company This is much more than a photograph album, as there are narratives on each phase of the Clan Line story, offering many new insights into how the Cayzers built up one of the great British cargo liner companies. THIS IS NOT A WORLD SHIP SOCIETY PUBLICATION, AND IS NOT AVAILABLE FROM THE SOCIETY.
It is almost a quarter of a century since the Centenary of the founding, in 1878 by Charles Cayzer, of what was to become, in 1890, Clan Line Steamers Ltd. Since then all the ships with the familiar two red bands on a black funnel have disappeared from the oceans along with the company, but they are not forgotten. Clan Line is still very much spoken about in today's shipping circles. Many of the senior officials in ports and in the shipping industry worldwide have fond memories of the company and its ships. As far as I am aware there has been no definitive history written about the whole company, generally known throughout the last century as Cayzer Irvine & Co. Ltd. This volume of old photographs compiled from the collections of Bob Briscoe and the author (both ex-company employees) will certainly go some way to revive old memories. 102 pages. A5. Continuing this very popular series. The final volume of the series, which has featured some of the many ships built for, or operated by the Cayzer family for a little over 100 years. Alas, the company and the ships are no more, but there are countless memories in photographs, artefacts, literature and in the memories of those that served under the Clan Line house flag, or on ships which were within the whole Cayzer Irvine Group. Readers of this volume, will find several items, other than photographs, which will stir the memories of bygone days. 120 pages. A5. This is where the Commercial Life of Vancouver commenced, where the CPR finally completed its West Coast terminal station at the foot of Granville Street and built its transpacific and coastal steamship piers. This was the original crossroads of Commerce and Society for the West Coast. The waterfront of Coal Harbour was where much of the port's boatbuilding and engineering capacity first established. This book focuses on the geographical area that today is known as Coal Harbour. Today it is the home of luxury hotels, high rise condominiums, billionaires and and a new class of the wealthy and privileged. They occupied the former sites of shipyards, engine builders and greasy spoons, where yarding engines shunted railcars, tankers tied up and men and women in hard hats, overalls and heavy workboots took time off and gulped down a coffee and a burger.

Coasters Go To War: Military Sailings to the Continent, 1939-1945
Author: John de S. Winser, ISBN: 978 1 901703 56 6, Ref: 8734, Publisher: Ships in Focus Publications
This book details for the first time the key role played by Allied coasters in supporting military operations during the war in Western Europe. In the ealy days of the Second World War, a dozen coasters were requisitioned to carry ammunition and petrol to the British Expeditionary Force in France. By June 1940, this number had grown to over 160, and their supply task had been overtaken by the urgent need to rescue troops from the beaches near Dunkirk, and from ports right down the Bay of Biscay. Part I of the book tells how over 40,000 personnel were evacuated by coasters, often under fire. Part II is concerned with the unique contribution coasters made to the military campaign which began with the invasion of Normandy in June 1944 and continued until VE day. The book details the convoys, the cargoes and the challenges during an operation which involved a total of 460 coasters of ten different nationalities. Author John de S. Winser is known for a number of authoritative books on military support operations during the Second World War, and his latest work will appeal to both those with an interest in the military operations and in the coasters themselves.

Built between 1887 and 1893, the Manchester Ship Canal is rightly regarded as one of the finest engineering achievements of the Victorian era. Its construction was of vital importance to the industrial growth and economic prosperity of north-west England. Although trade has declined during the last 30 years and the docks in the upper section of the Canal have been swept away in dramatic development projects, there still remains much of maritime interest. Compendium of Australasian Merchant Ships 1831-2008
Sub-titled: A listing of non-sail-powered Australian, New Zealand and South Pacific merchant ships
Author: Robert (Bob) Tompkins, ISBN: ???, Ref: 8725, Publisher: Nautical Association of New Zealand
This is the first single reference source listing the technical details and histories of a large number of Australasian merchant ships since the first steamer arrived in Australia in 1831 through the present time. An A4 landscape solidly bound soft cover book of 316 pages with 7,500 entries, this landmark work contains far more information on the subject than any previous publication. It is a 'must have' for anyone or any library, maritime museum or other organization wishing to have ready access to such information on Australasian ships.
Over his lifetime up to his death in 2006, Bob Tompkins, a former NAA President and Committee member, built up this large body of information on Australian, New Zealand and South Pacific ships over 45 feet in length. Where the information could be obtained, the record includes gros tonnage, year built, ship type, dimensions, builder, build location, original owner and subsequent names and owners and periods of ownership, as well as final fate. For easy reference ships are listed separtely under each name under an Australasian flag. By including vessels down to 45 feet in length the book provides information on large numbers of ships not included in most readily available sources and this adds greatly to its value. Since Bob's death the text has been extensively reviewed and updated to the beginning of 2008 by the Secretary of the NAA, Peter Cundall, adding to the final result.
This popular book was the forerunner of A Great Fleet of Ships. However, neither one is a duplicate of the other as both cover different sectors. A feature of this book is that it also covers the First World War building program of standard wood and steel merchant ships, built on both coasts and in the Great Lakes.
The book deals with the Canadian shipbuilding effort, in what can only be described as a prodigious industrial achievement during both world wars in constructing fleets of merchant ships to counter the effects of the U-boat campaign. Ships were built in substantial numbers in Vancouver, Victoria, Prince Rupert and Eastern Canada. After each war significant numbers of vessels were sold to Canadian shipping companies and operated on world trade routes. The background and make-up of each war's shipbuilding program and individual ship types are described. Every ship built is listed. A great little book written by an author who served in the Canadian corvettes that escorted convoys across the Atlantic throughout WWII. There are many books about the Battle of the North Atlantic, but few have told, at first hand, the gut-wrenching story of the sailors on the lower deck who manned the guns, threw the depth charges and plotted the position of U boats as they stalked the merchant ships above. Today, 60 years or so later, those young men from prairie farms and city factories and offices are today's 80s and over, veteran survivors, many of whom have passed on. This book is a fitting memorial to their memory in what they gave and sacrificed. It is told in the words of individuals and the many pictures of the ships, convoys and survivors. 190pages, 6 in x 9 in. soft cover. In the closing years of the 19th century and the first decade of the 20th century, the ships of Archibald Currie & Company made up one of the largest Melbourne based fleets. It was the only Australian company with a major presence in the trades to India and south-east Asia until its services and ships were taken over the British India Steam Navigation Company Ltd., of London in 1913. Like so many companies, it began in sail before moving into steam in 1884. Its classically named steamers had special facilities for the carriage of horses, and the vessels played a leading role in the Australian contribution of men, horses and mules during the South African war of 1899 to 1902. As well as founding the shipping line, Archibald Currie was both an expert in salvage, and a leading Melbourne businessman, chairing the Board of the State Savings Banks for many years. The Currie Line ships and officers continued to play an important role in the story of British India Steam Navigation of London, then the largest shipping company under the British flag, for the next 20 years. This book records an important, but seldom recognized, part of Australia’s maritime history. There are illustrations of all 10 Currie steamers, as well as a fleet list of both sailing ships and steamers, 29 vessels in total. Bill Laxon, MBE, a WSS member, is an Auckland lawyer and maritime historian. He is a specialist historian on the ships and history of the P&O group companies, and author or co-author of B.I., the definitive history of The British India Steam Navigation Co. Ltd (1994), Crossed Flags, covering the histories of the New Zealand Shipping Company Ltd and the associated Federal Steam Navigation Co. Ltd (1997), as well as World Ship Society histories The Asiatic Steam Navigation Co. Ltd 1878-1963 (1963) and Nourse Line (1991). He has written several other books including Davey and the Awatea, a survey of the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand in the first three decades of the 20th century and is a regular contributor to various shipping journals. The Currie Line of Melbourne is a soft cover illustrated publication (150 x 210 mm) of 64 pages, published by the Nautical Association of Australia Inc.
